· West Wireless Health Institute, launched in 2009, is a medical research organization that supports the exploration and application of wireless technologies to advance healthcare. Focused on the convergence of two of San Diego’s leading industries – life sciences and wireless technology – the Institute moves lifesaving wireless health technologies quickly into the hands of doctors, healthcare organizations and endusers.
· The Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine is California’s leading grant recipient for work in human embryonic stem cell research. The consortium is made up of the University of California, San Diego; Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute; Salk Institute for Biological Studies; and The Scripps Research Institute.
· Corporations located in San Diego include Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Biogen Idec, Gen-Probe, Genentech, Johnson & Johnson, Life Technologies, and Pfizer.
· San Diego is home to more than 550 biomedical companies, and local universities and research institutions have spun off nearly 200 biotech firms.
· San Diego's biotech cluster employs an estimated 40,000 people and has a $9.2 billion annual impact on the local economy.
· In 2009 San Diego companies and research institutions received more than $1.2 billion in research funding from the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation.
· San Diego is home to 21 Nobel Laureates in the sciences.
