Internship Program Overview

San Diego Regional EDC and our Foundation offer a competitive internship program that provides students with valuable experience in economic development, marketing and communications, accounting, research, and more. EDC values diversity of thought, experience, and perspectives, and encourages individuals with non-traditional backgrounds to apply for these positions. We are a passionate +20-member team committed to supporting inclusive economic growth in San Diego, and are especially interested in applicants who are eager to learn and join us in this important work. The following are paid, remote, part-time internship positions. Access to a computer with basic functions, and a minimum of 15 working hours per week is required.

Fall 2020 Opportunities

The Economic Development internship will run from early September to early December 2020.

Specific Responsibilities and Duties

Project and Program Support – Support the implementation of plans, strategies, and activities that support the growth of San Diego’s economy.

  • Support the economic development team on projects, programs, meetings, and events.
  • Provide administrative support for company project work, e.g. excel input and data aggregation.
  • Conduct economic and industry research projects for clients, staff, and partners.
  • Maintain internal economic development databases and business resources.

Marketing / Communications – Support economic development programs and initiatives with marketing content and communications to inform companies, investors, board members and partners.

  • Create marketing content (eblasts, flyers, PowerPoints, media materials) to support the economic development team’s program and initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain content highlighting the strengths of the local economy.
  • Manage the collection of regional company success stories and news relevant to projects and compose regular newsletters, blog posts and reports.
  • Track relevant news related to business growth in San Diego and/or coverage that highlights EDC’s work.

Administration – Support EDC staff with office management tasks.

  • Assist staff with responding to inquiries from businesses.
  • Maintain the upkeep of marketing materials and data used to promote San Diego.
  • Provide logistical support for virtual events and meetings.

Key Qualifications

  • Recent grad or current student studying economics, business, political science, international relations, urban planning, statistics/data analytics, finance, journalism, marketing, communications and/or related fields.
    • Students with university, community college, or non-traditional education backgrounds are welcome to apply.
  • Self-directed and motivated team player with ability to manage multiple tasks at once and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

The Marketing and Communications internship will run from early September to early December 2020.

Specific Responsibilities and Duties

Marketing / Communications – Support EDC in its work to inform and interest key stakeholders – companies, investors, board members, and partners.

  • Manage the collection of success stories and news relevant to projects to compose regular newsletters and reports.
  • Assist with regular newsletter and blog creation for EDC, San Diego: Life. Changing., and other brands or initiatives managed by EDC.
  • Assist with social media account management by creating original material for distribution.
  • Maintain the upkeep of materials used to promote San Diego (website, brochures, data sheets, etc.).
  • Assist with event preparation, as needed (note: we will host only virtual events only for the fall internship session).
  • Assist with website maintenance.
  • Assist with graphics design, video editing, and other media curation.

Office Administration – Support EDC staff with administrative tasks.

  • Assist the coordinator staff with inquiry and request responses.
  • Assist with data and information maintenance.

Key Qualifications

  • Recent graduate or currently enrolled in a university, community college, or training program.
    • Students with university, community college, or non-traditional education backgrounds are welcome to apply.
  • Self-directed and motivated team player with ability to manage multiple tasks at once.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Some experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign and Photoshop), as well as with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Some experience with social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
  • Some experience with website platforms such as WordPress is helpful but not required.
  • Some experience with CRM platforms such as Salesforce is helpful but not required.

Due to the nature of the accounting internship, it will be a six-month minimum position. The internship period runs from September 2020 to March 2021 with a week off in December.

Specific Responsibilities and Duties

Accounting– Support accounting entries and processing to ensure accurate financial reporting.

  • Assist with month-end financial reporting.
  • Provide analysis and reporting for accounts receivable, accounts payable, and GL reconciliations.
  • Post journal entries and enter data to ensure accurate reports.
  • Assist with yearly audit tasks.
  • Support payment processing tasks.
  • Enact routine administrative tasks including filing, banking, and handling of financial correspondence.
  • Additional projects and tasks to be assigned, as needed.

Key Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in accounting, business administration, economics, finance, or a related field.
    • Students with university, community college, or non-traditional education backgrounds are welcome to apply.
  • Current senior or junior-level students preferred.
  • Completion of Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting or equivalent classes preferred.
  • Self-directed and motivated team player with the ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Ability to work well independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Good organization, time management, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in software programs such as Microsoft Access and Inuit’s Quickbooks a plus but not required.

A determination regarding the nature of spring 2021 internships will be made at a later date, taking into consideration all recommendations from the CDC and requirements from the State of California’s Office of the Governor.

Specific Responsibilities and Duties

Research – Responsible for collecting and analyzing data on San Diego’s economy.

  • Collect and analyze publicly available data in order to understand the regional economy and key economic drivers.
  • Research and analyze key industries within the region’s economy.
  • Assist with data collection, analysis, and writing of in-depth industry-specific reports.
  • Produce written analysis under guidance from the research team for publication on EDC’s website.
  • Compile and aggregate data to be used for producing blogs, industry analyses, and ad-hoc projects, as needed.

Project Management – Work with research team and outside partners to ensure quarterly goals are met.

  • Track progress on data collection and analyses, and report weekly to research coordinator.
  • Produce impact analysis reports for blogs, industry analyses, and ad-hoc projects, as needed.

Administrative

  • Assist with data management. Responsibilities include preparing datasets, in addition to maintenance and storage.
  • Help develop and maintain databases for official and proprietary economic and financial data, preferably using a statistical package such as:
    • Identify data sources (e.g., Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, St. Louis Fed FRED websites).
    • Produce algorithm(s) to pull data from sources.
    • Build, organize, and maintain internal databases for the data pulled from the sources above.
  • Support documentation of methodology and analysis.
  • Assist research team, as needed.

Key Qualifications

  • Pursuing an accredited college or university degree in economics, public policy, urban studies, or related field.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skills and competencies including: client-focused, adaptable and flexible, and unquestionable integrity.
  • Self-directed critical thinker and motivated team player with ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Strong macro-economic background, with familiarity with regional macro-economic data sources.
  • Strong quantitative abilities.
  • Experience extracting and analyzing public data; sources include but are not limited to U.S. Census Data, California ED Labor Market Info, Bureau of Labor Statistics data, and Bureau of Economic Analysis data.
  • Experience with database management and statistical software packages such as R, Matlab, Stata, eViews, SqlServer, and Python.

Company Overview
World Trade Center San Diego drives the region’s global competitiveness priorities through growing exports and foreign investment, deepening ties to strategic international markets, and boosting the region’s global identity. WTC San Diego operates as an affiliate of the San Diego Regional EDC.

General Function
Support administration of the MetroConnect export assistance program, international trade missions, and the broader WTC San Diego global competitiveness agenda. This position reports to the Coordinator, World Trade Center San Diego.

Specific Responsibilities and Duties

Program Management – Support the implementation of plans, strategies, and activities to maximize San Diego’s economic prosperity and competitiveness through increased global engagement.

  • Provide administrative and event management support for the MetroConnect program.
  • Conduct research on specific trade and investment needs for clients, staff, and partners.
  • Provide logistical and planning support for overseas trade missions and events in target markets.

Marketing/Communications – Support WTC San Diego with the development of communication pieces to inform companies, investors, board members, and partners.

  • Draft monthly and quarterly newsletters and blogs related to the MetroConnect program and regional trade and investment flows.
  • Manage the collection of success stories and news relevant to projects.
  • Manage WTC San Diego’s social media accounts by creating original content for distribution.

Research and Office Administration – Support EDC and WTC San Diego staff with office management tasks.

  • Assist WTC San Diego coordinator with responding to client inquiries.
  • Track deal flow and investment data.
  • Draft agendas, reports, and presentations for meetings.

Key Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in international relations, business administration, economics, or related field.
  • Self-directed and motivated team player with the ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills and public speaking.
  • Proficiency in a second language preferred but not required.
